The first step in tackling substance misuse in the workplace is to introduce a well thought out workplace drugs and alcohol policy.
Each company will have its own views on what that policy should contain, however it is essential to seek early advice in order to save time and expenditure at a later stage.
Legal advice is therefore often appropriate before embarking on workplace drug and alcohol testing policy.

Legal Issues
There are no legal obstacles preventing the introduction of workplace drug and alcohol testing. Provided the policy and methods are fair, reasonable and appropriate and have been properly consulted with the workforce and staff associations then they can be introduced.
