Employee Drug Tests
Drug tests are used in the workplace in a variety of situations including, for cause, post incident, scheduled and random testing of employees.
Drug testing in the criminal justice system
Large numbers of drug tests also take place in police stations, prisons and by court orders to monitor and supervise offenders’ behaviour.
Prisoners arrested for acquisitive crime are also drug tested to determine whether treatment could be offered.
Urine drug tests
Drugs can be easily detected in samples of urine.
Many urine drug tests are undertaken in the laboratory (back to lab tests) but more and more tests are carried out on site using point of care drug tests (POC)
Although POC drug tests are very reliable they do require laboratory confirmations when a non-negative result is revealed.
Urine drug tests provide a wide window of detection and can detect cannabis use up to several weeks after the drug has been used.
Oral fluid/saliva drug tests.
Drugs can also be detected in saliva and this drug testing method is becoming increasingly popular. It is less embarrassing and time consuming than a urine drug test and is much more difficult to cheat.
Saliva drug tests have smaller windows of detection and therefore only detect drugs in the blood stream. This is sometimes considered a fairer and more reasonable method of ascertaining whether an individual has used drugs recently and is therefore under the influence.
Saliva drug tests sometimes lack the levels of sensitivity found in urine tests particularly in the detection of cannabis use. The Home Office has set challenging levels of sensitivity for saliva testing which MHS are capable of meeting using their unique drugalyser technology.
Hair drug testing
Drugs can be detected in hair over a much longer period of time,
Hair drug tests can reveal evidence of drugs over a period of 30 to 90 days. The growth of hair is usually at the rate of 0.5 inches per month.
Hair drug tests are helpful for ascertaining use/or abstinence over lengthy periods of time, usually 3-6 months. The procedures are widely used by courts in child access proceedings where a parent may be suspected of using drugs and present a danger to the child.
Hair drug testing can be undertaken using a collection service or by a home kit. Hair testing
Drug testing in sport
Drug testing is widely used in sporting activities to detect the presence of performance enhancing steroids but also includes controlled substances such as cannabis, cocaine and heroin.
Workplace Drug testing
Workplace drug testing has been used for a number of years, originally in the safety critical industries. It has however become more common in other ‘white collar’ industries in recent years.
Employee drug testing is used as a safety check on employees usually in the safety critical industries such as petro chemicals, transport and the rail industry.
Employees are tested for suspicion, post incident, pre-employment.
Random scheduled drug testing is often undertaken in the safety critical industries as a deterrent measure.
Workplace drug testing is usually undertaken by third party collectors although it is becoming increasingly popular for drugs and alcohol screening to be undertaken in-house by trained company employees ’Workplace drug testing‘

Roadside drug testing. Drugalyser
There is widespread concern at the high levels of drivers driving under the influence of drugs.
The Home Office has drawn up standards for the effective detection of drugs in oral fluid using advanced drug testing technology.
The Drugalyser is likely to be the only drug testing technology capable of reaching sufficient levels of sensitivity as being ‘fit for purpose’ for the high standards required.
MHS provides one of the widest range of drug testing services for clinics, workplace and private use including drug driving technology.
