Dengue fever epidemic fears
Dozens of people have died from an outbreak of dengue fever in the Dominican Republic which is feared could reach epidemic proportions. Peutro Rico also say they are facing the worst outbreak in more than 10 years. The increase is blamed on the warm weather and rainy conditions which has produced an explosion of mosquitoes. Dengue fever is prevalent throughout the tropics with outbreaks reported in the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Cuba, and Central America. Contagious cases have also been imported via tourists returning from infected areas such as Tahiti, the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, the West Indies, India, and the Middle East. According to the World Health Organization, there are an estimated 50 million cases of dengue fever with 500,000 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever requiring hospitalization each year.
